The Good Guys at Kalil

76 Years of Kalil History

In August of 2024, one of the oldest family-owned businesses in Arizona took down its signs and transferred its business to publicly traded American beverage and coffeemaker conglomerate Keurig Dr Pepper.

Since Kalil Bottling Co. first opened its doors in 1948 in Tucson, AZ, it steadily evolved into one of the top beverage distributors in the country - and one of the few remaining private bottlers left in the game in 2024.

The Kalil family has been in Arizona since before statehood, when Frank Kalil Sr. entered the territory on horseback from Mexico in the early 1900s.  Before landing in Tucson, Frank Sr. (originally from Lebanon), had owned a general store/watering hole/billiards hall in Cananea, Mexico.  One day, after confronting a certain Mexican revolutionary and bandit about his overdue tab, he was given a choice:  "Get on yer horse and leave, or stay and die."

That customer was the notorious Pancho Villa, and a spared Frank Sr. chose to head north on his horse.  More than 100 years later, the Kalil family proudly continued Frank Sr.'s legacy of hard work and entrepreneurialism, successfully growing the generational business exponentially.

Frank Sr.'s grandsons and great-grandsons continued to wet whistles in the Grand Canyon State with carbonated soft drinks, waters, seltzers, ready-to-drink coffees and teas, lemonades, performance hydration beverages and energy drinks.

Long ago were the days when Frank Sr. and his wife would mix soda syrup in their Tucson kitchen.  Kalil's fully automated bottling plant, still located in Tuson, had a cold-pack production capacity of more than 20 million cases per year, and the family-run business produced many of the state's favorite beverages, including 7UP, Squirt and Monster Energy.

Kalil became a household name in Arizona in the 1980s, sponsoring countless large public events across the state, including the Fabulous Phoenix Fourth of July fireworks show and Lake Havasu Teen Spring Break.

"My family is going to miss this.  We're grateful to Arizona for allowing us to serve you all these years.  Life without bubbles would be flat..." President John P. Kalil said.  "...but, these past 76 years have been anything but.  Thank you, Arizona."
